co-ordinates: beta quadrant sector 23 aquarion 4
symbient archive: astrogram supplemental
nav: neto
interface: nova
there are times worth remembering in this infinite realm of astral cartography. space is certainly not empty, though much of it is void of anything truly interesting. nova keeps good company and tech is pretty much endless in terms of temporal spatial computations, but they don't really know what anything feels like. after awhile you want something a bit more visceral to sit down and chat with.
i put the temporal shard into the side pocket of the pack and hook up the neurolink to nova. i calibrate the shard to the time that i will leave nova and then set the co-ordinates for a week previous. standard terran cycle. that should be enough. the calculations take awhile and nova complains that she feels uneasy bending time because she cant contain all the probable outcomes. whatever. -we've been over this
" just don't get too high on yourself in there with all the information"
nova blushes if such a thing is possible for sentient technology. i wonder to what extent she can feel emotions. i know she's nervous about elvish coding. aggressive entities in the halls of time have little mercy on rudimentary terracrystal and biobeings. so far we haven't met any malevolent mages but they know we've been in a few times. we're being tracked for sure. just ask solarion . last time we met in the elf's immense and immaculately organized network library (by far the best maps of this galaxy, as well as hundreds of others) he mentioned the "rep" i was getting amongst those who ride the waveforms. sage and stern advice from a master who has seen
wyk would have us impaled if she knew what we were up to.. can't blame her though, i think there's a lot more at stake for the elves in this matter. they've been around forever in the galaxy, and we'd call them gods if humans hadn't gotten so arrogant about their negligible power in the cosmos. half the earthborn will be scared speechless at the intensity of galactik central, let alone the piercing crystal halls of the elvish time portals. most terrans dream of space, but they don't relate to the size of it at all. elves have no time for those with little knowledge of their real size in the scheme of things . some take pity on desperately evolving lifeforms, like wyk, who likes me for some reason (i suspect she is fond of ikon). maybe its because i have elvish genetiks, 3 generations back. first contact we call it. ha. the elves have mixed their genes all over the galaxy, but the pure ones don't muck about in the affairs of their confused offspring. freakin little monkeys from earth don't even know their roots and are reaching for the stars.
i was born in space, on an recon navpod like this one. in fact, nova is a fractal of the original mainframe of my mother's legendary ship nebula. i designed the external energy field and recalibrated nova for higher velocity. mom hated to move too fast, even tho nebula was way more advanced in the math of trajectories than nova. i should say was. nova has made great leaps in the sentient side of things and i think she has a better grasp of human dynamiks, making her faster in anticipation of polyprobable outcomes. nebula still resisted the pushes and pulls of emotional human response. hard logic. she saved mom's life a number of times however, a fact that was never forgotten and probably is still not (nebula is the lead network interface for the whole astrographik section of the terran fleet. it was easier that way, seeing as she had more info than all the rest of the whole terran database combined. aeon (mom) loved the elvish hallways and scouted innumerable systems. nebula represents pretty much the whole recorded archives of human exploration of the outer reaches. nebula loves crusing slowly and digesting the data. nova loves to fly. i grew up watching stars fly by in hyperspace.
nova and i have an agreement. i call the shots and she offers her speed at computation. i often laugh when she tries to think like me. ikon started programming in lexical subroutines and new speech syntax emulators in an attempt to ease nova further into the world beyond numbers. now half the time she's talking back or trying her hand at sarcasm. often i wonder whether or not ikon and her are having a bit of a joke at my expense. ha.
ikon. he knows nova as well as i do, and better in many ways, seeing as he was born plugged into the neurolink. his mother was into tech and as a result he was born with a shard in his mouth. damn fine navigator. seems a bit baffled by human behaviour, even tho he was earthborn. its almost as if he's the dream of the shards in flesh, like a computer with a body. i wouldnt be surprised if he was some elvish biotech symbiant. elves do that. ikon likes to party too much for that. elves would never allow their tech to get that wild. maybe he's renegade tech. ha. damn fine navigator, and a good friend.
technology or biology, if it's sentient then it can become an ally or an enemy. allies come in handy so i tend to befriend all kinds of beings. i like thinking that an enemy is just an ally you havent figured out yet.
unfortunately i am arriving on this planet alone. ikon is probably fending off kysa's crazy truth potions and plant elixirs. i feel bad having left him in her clutches, but i say it with affection. i went thru the years of strenuous rituals with the plants. kysa had me navigating unspeakable worlds of vegetal information. maybe because i wasnt born on earth i just felt it less or something. some of the earthborn are downright religious about that plant connection. i see it as one of a number of infinite coded permutations of information. i love ganja i hate poison ivy . kysa grew some of that just to bug me. not all plants have become allies of neto yet, that's for sure. plants are older than elves. go figure.
so i arrive in the middle of an aquarion 4 rainforest. best to avoid the metropolis mentality although i will have to hike for several days according to nova. i'd love to just materialize right in the middle of the city but it tends to shock the residents, and if they happen to be unfriendly with timeriders then it might mean physical imprisonment, or worse fates (see entry. 23/05/62.21).
i'm in the middle of a pulsating breathing jungle world. the trees (if that is what i can call them, they look more like roots structures forming an almost impenetrable canopy overhead).some light beats down thru assorted little cracks.
a clear calm warm water covers the majority of the forest floor with the odd rock or two popping out of the misty depths. i imagine this is what the everglades look like. i point the handheld scan unit and sweep 360 degrees looking at the readout in the left side of my field of vision. off the hook bio readouts. the whole place is a soup of life. hard to pinpoint anything of immediate interest sifting thru heaps of energetik data. i have set nova to give me relevant feedback on lifeforms that either pose threats or present opportunties. i realize thats probably a wide range. if nova could sigh, she would.
nova asesses the immediate readings for edible plants and immediately reports that, surprisingly enough, there are no evident toxins within terran parameters. i breathe deeply, the oxygen is rich and aromatic. i sense that everything around me is intensely and vibrantly alive. nova scans the data for solid ground and locates a rock formation within 200 yards. i jump into the water and start swimming. neuromesh is water sealed and allows the body to swim easily and emerge dry. damn fine invention, if not slightly ganked by the terran materialists from the elves. i swimm with the led light pointed straight ahead and arrive at rocky structure about 200 feet in diameter. i look up and see the crags climbing up beyond the mist and the tree canopy into the sky. good thing i loved rock climbing as a kid. i used to scale the whole ship without touching the the ground.
so i start climbing upwards and in about 15 minutes i am 20 or thirty feet above the treetops and perched out atop the cliff which is a cross between a cliff and a mesa. there are several levels of observation up here. i hold the SCU up and allow sky to have a closer look. out across the distance is a seemingly endless sea of green punctuated by similar crags popping thru the top.
-uh nova, is it possible we got the co-ordinates slightlty off.i dont see much up here-
-we had to avoid any timestream fluctuation devices, so i placed you about 3 days from the nearest potential settlement. judging from my reading about 23 degrees to your west.
i hold the SCU and align the directional compass head to use nova as a navigational beacon.
guess i better start swimming.
